Biocompatible Materials at Innovamed

What are biocompatible materials and why are they essential?

Biocompatible materials are those that can come into contact with the human body without causing adverse reactions. Their use is critical in the manufacture of medical devices, as they ensure patient safety, product performance, and regulatory compliance, in accordance with standards such as ISO 10993, USP Class VI, and the MDR and IVDR Regulations.

At Innovamed Spain, we work exclusively with certified and fully traceable materials, ensuring that every medical component manufactured meets the highest quality, safety, and regulatory compliance requirements in sectors such as medical devices, cardiovascular devices, drug delivery, diagnostics, dermocosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

Types of biocompatible materials in medical devices

In the healthcare industry, there are different families of biomaterials. At Innovamed, we specialize in the processing and injection molding of medical-grade polymers, mainly intended for non-implantable medical devices.

- Medical-grade polymers
These are the most widely used materials due to their versatility, stability, and cost efficiency, especially in plastic injection molding, micro-injection, and cleanroom assembly processes:

  • Polypropylene (PP): high flowability and chemical resistance.
  • Polyethylene (PE / LDPE / HDPE): ideal for flexible components, primary packaging, and contact with medical fluids.
  • Polycarbonate (PC): high transparency and excellent mechanical and dimensional strength, widely used in diagnostic devices.
  • ABS: excellent dimensional stability and mechanical performance for precision technical parts.
  • TPE / TPU: thermoplastic elastomers used in seals, connectors, grips, and flexible components.
  • PEEK: high-performance technical polymer for applications requiring high thermal, chemical, and mechanical resistance.
  • Elastomeric PA: combines flexibility, strength, and lightness; widely used in catheters, tubing, and minimally invasive devices.
  • Functional compounds: formulations with added properties such as radiopacity, enhanced chemical resistance, specific medical coloration, or antistatic behavior.

These materials enable the manufacture of medical consumables, functional components, high-precision parts, and customized solutions for applications such as cardiovascular devices, drug delivery systems, diagnostic devices, dermocosmetics, healthcare, and the medical and pharmaceutical sectors.

The importance of choosing the right material

Selecting a biocompatible material goes far beyond regulatory compliance. It directly impacts:

  • Patient safety
  • Device strength and durability
  • Compatibility with sterilization methods
  • Feasibility of injection molding and assembly processes
  • Scalability of downstream assembly operations

An inappropriate material choice can compromise the performance and reliability of the entire device. For this reason, Innovamed supports its customers from the early stages of the project, both in contract manufacturing environments and in custom medical device innovation developments, jointly evaluating:

  • Intended use of the device
  • Biocompatibility regulatory requirements
  • Required mechanical and chemical properties
  • Compatibility with downstream manufacturing processes
  • Industrialization and sterilization strategy

New trends: sustainable and resorbable materials

- Sustainable biocompatible materials
Sustainability is also a growing trend in the medical devices, healthcare, and dermocosmetics sectors. There are biocompatible polymers of bio-based origin, recyclable materials, or materials with a lower environmental footprint, enabling more responsible solutions without compromising safety or regulatory compliance. At Innovamed, we assess these alternatives together with the customer, always using a realistic approach aligned with regulatory and product validation requirements.

- Resorbable biocompatible materials
Resorbable materials
are designed to degrade in a controlled manner in the body after fulfilling their function. Although their use is mainly focused on implantable applications, they represent a key innovation area within biomaterials. We closely monitor their evolution and collaborate with specialists to assess their industrial and regulatory feasibility when required by the project.

The evolution of biocompatible materials is continuous, with new formulations, improved mechanical performance, enhanced sterilization compatibility, and sustainability advances. At Innovamed, we work together with global experts and leaders in medical-grade materials, enabling us to advise our customers with an up-to-date, reliable vision aligned with industry best practices in such a critical area as material selection.
