As a strategic and fundamental industry, the healthcare technology sector in Spain makes important contributions, both at the healthcare, social and economic levels. Therefore, in order to respond to health crises, it is necessary to support and strengthen medical device manufacturers in our country, reducing the current dependence on external markets, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Currently, the network of medical technology companies in Spain includes a thousand companies - including 500 factories - with a turnover of 8.8 billion euros, of which 3.5 billion euros correspond to exports. This industry generates around 28,300 direct jobs and more than 100,000 indirect jobs.
As Luis Adot, President of Manufacturers, Exporters and SMEs Sector at Fenin, says, "this industry will have many possibilities of growth in the next years in Spain if we know how to take advantage of the opportunities that will be generated in the health sector at a global level, and if we reach a good harmony between the companies, the Public Administrations, universities, scientific societies, and other organisms, in order to create agreements of public-private collaboration for the development of new initiatives".
